Every security team wants automated policy management. The promise is clear: let machine learning handle your SELinux rules, firewall policies, and access controls. Set it and forget it.
But when teams deploy these systems, they discover the gap between marketing claims and operational reality. Myths about automated security policy tools persist because vendors oversell capabilities and practitioners underestimate what "automation" actually means.
The research behind CASPR—a context-aware policy recommendation system presented at NDSS 2025—offers a useful lens for examining what automation can and cannot do. Let's break down the misconceptions.
Myth 1: Automated Policy Tools Eliminate the Need for Security Expertise
Reality: They shift where you apply expertise, not whether you need it.
CASPR achieves 91.582% average accuracy in recommending rules and a 93.761% F1-score. Impressive numbers, but operationally, roughly 1 in 12 recommendations will be wrong.
In a production environment with thousands of policy rules, that error rate compounds. You're not eliminating manual review—you're changing what you review. Instead of writing every rule from scratch, you're validating recommendations, investigating edge cases, and handling the 8% of scenarios the system gets wrong.
The expertise requirement shifts from "write correct policies" to "identify when a recommended policy creates unintended access paths or blocks legitimate workflows." This requires understanding the security model, application architecture, and threat landscape. Automation gives you a different starting point, not a shortcut around knowledge.
Myth 2: Context-Aware Systems Understand Your Business Context
Reality: They understand technical context, not organizational context.
CASPR uses clustering and context-aware features to analyze system behavior and recommend policies. It examines process relationships, file access patterns, and system calls—technical context.
What it doesn't capture: why your finance team needs temporary elevated access during month-end close, why developers require production read access during incident response, or why a legacy application needs permissions that violate your standard security model.
You still need to encode business logic into policy decisions. The tool can tell you "this process accessed these files with these permissions." You have to decide whether that access should be allowed based on who's running the process, when, and for what business purpose.
Consider compliance requirements like PCI DSS v4.0.1 Requirement 7.2.2, which requires access rights based on job function. A context-aware system can cluster similar access patterns, but it can't map those patterns to job roles or determine if the access is appropriate.
Myth 3: Anomaly Detection Means Automatic Security
Reality: Anomaly detection means automatic alerting on things you still have to investigate.
CASPR can automatically detect and repair three kinds of anomalies: constraint conflicts, policy inconsistencies, and permission incompleteness. That sounds comprehensive, but "detect and repair" isn't the same as "secure by default."

You need a separate validation layer that checks recommended policies against your security requirements, compliance controls, and threat model. That validation requires human judgment about acceptable risk.
Myth 5: Automated Tools Replace Security Policy Documentation
Reality: They make documentation more critical, not less.
When you write policies manually, the process creates implicit documentation. You remember why you made specific decisions because you made them recently.
Automated systems generate policies faster than you can internalize them. You end up with hundreds or thousands of rules where you understand the pattern but not the specifics. When something breaks or a compliance auditor asks why a particular permission exists, you need documentation that explains the reasoning.
For SOC 2 Type II compliance, you need evidence that access controls are designed appropriately and operating effectively. "The ML model recommended it" isn't sufficient evidence. You need documentation showing: what business requirement drove the access need, what alternatives you considered, why this specific permission set was chosen, and how you validated it doesn't create excessive access.
What to Do Instead
Start with a clear understanding of what automation actually provides: faster initial policy generation and better anomaly detection. Not security by default.
Build your implementation around these principles:
Define your security model first. Document what access patterns are acceptable, what constitutes excessive permissions, and how you handle exceptions. The automated system should recommend policies that fit your model, not define the model for you.
Implement validation gates. Every automatically recommended policy should pass through validation that checks: Does this match our security requirements? Does it create any compliance gaps? Does it enable any unintended access paths? For high-risk resources, require manual approval even if the recommendation scores high confidence.
Maintain business context separately. Create a system of record that links technical policies to business requirements. When the automated system recommends a policy, document why that access is needed and who approved it. This becomes your audit trail.
Test in non-production first. Deploy recommended policies in a test environment and monitor for broken functionality or security gaps. Use that feedback to tune the system before rolling to production.
Plan for model drift. As your environment changes, the model's recommendations will become less accurate. Schedule regular retraining and validation cycles. Monitor the error rate on recommendations and investigate when it increases.
Automation tools like CASPR represent genuine progress in security policy management. But they're productivity multipliers, not security silver bullets. Use them to handle the mechanical work faster so your team can focus on the judgment calls that actually require expertise.
